Duale vows to integrate oral health into UHC after meeting with dentists

                             
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has pledged to make oral health a central component of Kenya’s Universal Health Coverage (UHC) plan, following talks with the Kenya Dental Association (KDA) leadership.

In a statement posted on his official X account on Monday, August 11, 2025, Duale announced that he met KDA officials led by Dr Kahura Mundia to reaffirm the government’s commitment to elevating oral health as a key pillar of the country’s health agenda.“Held a bilateral meeting with the leadership of the Kenya Dental Association (KDA), led by Dr. Kahura Mundia, to reaffirm our shared commitment to advancing oral health as a key pillar of the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda,” the statement reads.

Prioritising oral health

According to the CS, the Ministry of Health will integrate oral health into the community health framework by including it in the training of Community Health Promoters and in the electronic Community Health Information System.

“I outlined the Ministry’s integration of oral health into the community health framework by incorporating it into Community Health Promoters’ training and the electronic Community Health Information System,” Duale stated.Duale assured KDA that the Ministry is determined to ensure oral health is visible, well-funded, and prioritised in national health planning.

“I also updated the team on ongoing digitisation reforms to curb unqualified practice, assuring KDA of the Ministry’s steadfast commitment to making oral health visible, well-funded and central to our health priorities,” he stated.

New partnership

The CS also highlighted a new partnership with the Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, and Adolescent Health (RMNCAH) program to educate Kenyans from an early age about oral health.
